Clerk’s Election Department Recognized for
Improving Voter Accessibility

The Clerk and Recorder’s Elections Department is honored to receive the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s "Clearie" Award for best practices in improving voting accessibility for persons with disabilities. The national award recognizes the Department’s work in leveraging community relationships to expand resources for voters with disabilities.

Our Elections Department partnered with The Independence Center (TIC) in 2016 and 2017 to identify specific challenges to voting accessibility for voters with disabilities.  Among improvements to accessibility were TIC training election judges in disability etiquette, open houses held to demonstrate how to use election equipment, ASL interpreters available to assist voters.  This year, our office produced its first ASL-interpreted sample ballot for the 2017 Coordinated Election. Only a handful of similar videos have been produced throughout the country. The Independence Center also operated as a Voter Service and Polling Center for two days.

This is the fifth award in as many years achieved by our Election team, professionals dedicated to conducting fair, transparent, accurate elections with excellent efficiency. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office is proud of the accomplishments of the Elections Department.  And, most importantly, the valuable service we provide to voters with disabilities and all voters in El Paso County.
