INFORMATION FOR MILITARY NON-RESIDENTS
If you are an active duty military member assigned to a duty station in Colorado or were assigned to a unit in Colorado from which you were then assigned to an unaccompanied/remote duty station, you may qualify for a non-resident exemption. Only the active military member or a lawful agent with power of attorney (copy of the general power of attorney or original if a specific power of attorney) and a copy of orders indicating a Colorado duty station may execute the non-resident affidavit. This affidavit is valid for 60 days from the execution date. A separate affidavit must be provided for each vehicle and renewed on an annual basis (Online renewals cannot be processed with a non-resident affidavit. Renewals must be processed in person or via mail). The non-resident affidavit allows exemption from paying Colorado ownership tax. You may obtain the affidavit by clicking on the link above, from your legal office on base, or your motor vehicle office. A military ID card is also required.
All other new resident requirements apply.
NOTE: It is the responsibility of each military member to request and ensure that he or she receives the military non-residency exemption as our office has a 30-day refund policy on ownership tax paid in error. Further questions may be answered by contacting the Motor Vehicle Department at (719) 520-6240 or via email at carweb@elpasoco.com.
