ELECTION JUDGE INFORMATION

The Election Department greatly appreciates its election judges and student election judges and has developed this area to provide helpful tools to help guide judges through their various roles and responsibilities on Election Day. We need your help! On Election Day over 1,800 election judges are needed to serve the voters at the polls in El Paso County. The Election Department is always looking for qualified individuals interested in serving as election judges. Each judge is required to attend a class of instruction prior to the election. The training class is three and a half hours long.  Judges will receive detailed instructions on how to complete their assigned job.  Judges assigned to work with election equipment will receive hands on training with the equipment to include setting up, operating, troubleshooting and closing down.  As a participant in the El Paso County Election Judge Program, you will receive compensation for your time on Election Day and training class. If you meet the following qualifications, and wish to become a part of our team, please complete the election judge application below.

You are 18 years or older.
You are registered to vote in El Paso County.
You have dependable transportation.
You are willing to attend a training class.
You are willing to do any assigned job as needed.

STUDENT ELECTION JUDGE
In an effort to increase awareness of the voting process, the Colorado Legislature enacted legislation which permits qualified students to serve as Student Election Judges. This is your opportunity to participate in the election process. If you are interested, just complete the application below. Serving as an election judge may qualify you for community service or academic credit. You may also be eligible to receive a minimum of $100 for working on Election Day. For your convenience, the application is provided in Adobe Acrobat format, which requires you to have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system for viewing. This form is interactive. A Fund Raising Project

We need your help! On Election Day over 1,800 election judges are needed to serve the voters at the polls in El Paso County. This program will provide your club or organization an opportunity to not only serve the people of El Paso County, but a chance to earn money for your club, organization, or fund raising project. Your participation in this partnership will promote civic responsibility, support the democratic process, and earn dollars for your group!

Every member of your organization you recruit to be an election judge can earn between $100.00 and $110.00, for your club, organization, or fund raising project. An additional stipend will be added for attending a training class prior to the election. The total amount of money earned is based on the number of people you recruit to work on Election Day. Following the election, each member of your organization would donate their earnings to your club, organization, or fund raising project.

If your group wishes to be assigned to a specific location or to work with specific group members please be sure to note that on the application. We will do our best to accommodate all of your requests but we may not be able to meet all of your requests due to statutory requirements.

The first step is to distribute the enclosed Election Judge Application to the interested members of your club or organization. The second step is to have interested members of your group click on the "Election Judge Job Descriptions" link below to see a list of job descriptions and responsibilities of election judges. Finally, have the interested members send their completed application to our office as soon as possible.

ELECTION JUDGE ASSIGNMENTS

Election Judge
Paid $100.00 for the day


As an Election Judge, you are required by law to attend a judge training class.


Election Judges are responsible for the election process at each polling place.

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. –7:00 p.m. You will need to report to your assigned polling place by 6:00 a.m. on Election Day to help setup. Judges will work until every elector is processed and all reports are completed. The Election Judges will make team decisions throughout the day and perform various duties, as described below:

AccuVote Supply Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Visiting the assigned polling place before Election Day to locate supplies and visit with the staff person that is responsible for opening the polling place on Election day.
    • Picking up the "A" & "B" bags the day before the election.
    • Setting up the AccuVote on election morning.
    • Operating the AccuVote throughout the day.
    • Closing down the AccuVote at the end of the day.
    • Completing the Polling place Combined Statement of Ballots at the end of the day.
    • Returning the "A" & "B" bags to the designated drop off location after voting has ended and everything is balanced and cleaned up. Provisional Judge and the Touch Screen Supply Judge must go with the AccuVote Supply Judge to return the equipment.
  • Pay
    • $105 for Election Day
    • $5 for Returning Supplies
    • $40 for Training Class


Touch Screen Supply Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Picking up the Touch Screen, Printer, Touch Screen Supply Bag, Provisional Ballot Bag and Black Supply Bags the day before the election.
    • Setting up the Touch Screen on election morning.
    • Operating the Touch Screen throughout the day (this includes changing the paper, trouble shooting, etc.).
    • Closing down the Touch Screen at the end of the day.
    • Completing the Touch Screen Combined Statement of Ballots.
    • Returning the Touch Screen, Printer, Touch Screen Supply Bag, Provisional Ballot Bag and Black Supply Bags to the designated drop off location after voting has ended and everything is balanced and cleaned up. Return supplies to the assigned drop off location with the Provisional Judge and the AccuVote Supply Judge.
  • Pay
    • $105 for Election Day
    • $5 for Returning Supplies
    • $40 for Training Class

Provisional Ballot Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Setting up the Provisional Ballot table on election morning.
    • Processing any voters that have to vote a provisional ballot.
    • Completing the Provisional Judges Statement of Ballots at the end of the day.
    • Closing down the Provisional Ballot table at the end of the day.
    • Accompany the Touch Screen Supply Judge and the AccuVote Supply Judge to the designated drop off location to return supplies.
  • Pay
    • $105 for Election Day
    • $5 for Returning Supplies
    • $40 for Training Class

Precinct Receiving Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Set-up the precinct table and polling place on election morning.
    • Help post all required signs.
    • Assemble the voting booths.
    • Verify that the precinct received the correct number of ballots by completing the Ballot Inventory Log.
    • Check voters in using the precinct poll book.
    • Check voter's identification.
    • Get all required information for the poll book.
    • Complete the Precinct Statement of Ballots & Ballot Inventory Log at the end of the day.
    • Pack up all supplies and close down the precinct table.
  • Pay
    • $100 for Election Day
    • $40 for Training Class

Touch Screen Ballot Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Help set-up the Touch Screen.
    • Program the voter access card for voters that choose to vote on the Touch Screen.
    • Understand how to program a voter access card to accomodate voters with disabilities (i.e. audio ballot, magnified ballot).
    • Complete the Touch Screen Precinct Statement of Ballots.
    • Help close down the Touch Screen at the end of the day.
  • Pay
    • $100 for Election Day
    • $40 for Training Class

Paper Ballot Judge

  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Help the Precinct Supply Judge set-up the precinct table and polling place.
    • Assign the proper ballot style to voters that choose to vote paper ballots.
    • Help close down the precinct and polling place at the end of the day.
  • Pay
    • $100 for Election Day
    • $40 for Training Class

Early Morning Judge

From the day of the last training class until Election Day approximately 100 judges drop out for various reasons.  Therefore trained early morning judges are greatly needed to fill the vacancies.  As an early morning judge you are responsible for reporting to Centennial Hall on election morning by 6:30 am.  As cancellations occur, the early morning judges are dispatched out to fill the vacant positions.  There is a good chance that early morning judges will receive an assignment several days before the election.  This position requires a great amount of flexibility.

  • Requirements
    • Attend a training class prior to the election.
    • Be willing to accept any assignment at any polling place throughout the county.
    • Have reliable transportation in case you are assigned to a position that requires picking up and returning supplies.
  • Pay
    • If assigned, you will be paid the regular amount for whatever type of judge you served as plus $40.00 for attending the training class.
    • If you don't receive an assignment you will be paid $30.00 plus $40.00 for attending the training class.
    • If you do not accept the position that is assigned to you, you will not be compensated for attending the training class.
    • If we call to assign you a position and you do not return our call, you will not be compensated for attending the training class.
    • If you have not been appointed by Election Day, and you fail to show up at Centennial Hall on election morning you will not be compenstaed for attending the training class.
