FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Election Department has compiled responses to some of the more commonly asked questions it receives regarding voting and voter registration. The staff is also available to assist you at (719) 575-VOTE (8683).


Who can vote? 

If you are a U.S. citizen and will be 18 years old on Election Day, you can vote. You must register 29 days before the election to qualify to vote in that election.


How do I become eligible to vote?

In order to be eligible to vote, you must register in the county in which you reside. By registering, you declare your residency in the State of Colorado within the county and district of your actual physical residence.


How do I change my address if I have moved?

If you move from your voter registration address, you must change your address with the Election Department. You can either mail your address change to the Clerk & Recorder's Office, or you can update your voter information at one of the Motor Vehicle office locations. If you are notifying the Election Department of your address change by mail, you will need to provide; your previous address, new address, date of birth, and signature. You may print the Voter Registration form located in the Forms section of the Election Department website to make any requested changes to your voter registration.


Do I have to bring my identification to register to vote?

No, it is not necessary to present identification when you register to vote in person. If you are a first time voter registering to vote by mail you will need to enclose a copy of one of the following forms of identification:

A valid Colorado driver's license ;
A valid identification card issued by the Department of Revenue ;
A valid U.S. passport ;
A valid employee identification card with a photograph of the eligible elector issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government or of this state, or by any county, municipality, board, authority, or other political subdivision of this state;
A valid pilot's license issued by the federal aviation administraton or other authorized agency of the United States;
A valid U.S. military identification card with a photograph;
A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the elector. (A cable bill, a telephone bill, documentation from a public institution of higher education in Colorado containing at least the name, date of birth, and residence address of the student elector, or a paycheck from a government institution or private company are sufficient forms of ID);
A valid Medicare or Medicaid card;
A certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate;
Certified documentation of naturalization; or
A valid student identification card with a photograph issued by an institution of higher education in Colorado.

Do I need to bring my identification when I go to vote (in person)?

Yes, one of the following forms of identification is required when voting early or at your polling place (in person):

A valid Colorado driver's license ;
A valid identification card issued by the Department of Revenue ;
A valid U.S. passport ;
A valid employee identification card with a photograph of the eligible elector issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government or of this state, or by any county, municipality, board, authority, or other political subdivision of this state;
A valid pilot's license  issued by the Federal Aviation Administration or other authorized agency of the United States;
A valid U.S. military identification card with a photograph;

Where do I vote?

You vote at your polling place in an assigned precinct, which is located in a neighborhood building, usually a school. After you register to vote, a voter information card is sent to you through the mail. Your voter information card contains your precinct number and the location of your polling place.

It is important that you know your precinct number and polling place location prior to Election Day. If you are unsure of this information, please call the Election Department at (719) 575-VOTE (8683) before Election Day.


When do I vote?

For a polling place election you may vote at your polling place any time on Election Day between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The opportunity to vote early is often offered during the two week period preceding Election Day; dates, times, and locations may be obtained by contacting the Election Department at (719) 575-VOTE (8683).


How can I receive a Mail-In Ballot?

Requests for a Mail-In Ballot shall be made using the application form furnished by the designated election official or in the form of a letter that includes the applicant's printed name, signature, residence address, mailing adress, address where the ballot is to be mailed to, and date of birth. A request for a ballot to be mailed may also be submitted by fax to (719) 520-7327. A request for a Mail-In Ballot may be filed any time after January 1 of the year of the election but not later than the close of business on the seventh day prior to the election . If the application is made for a primary election ballot, the application shall name the political party with which the applicant is affiliated or wishes to affiliate. If you are applying for a Mail-In Ballot to be mailed and you did NOT provide a copy of your ID when you registered to vote by mail, a copy of one of the following forms of identification is REQUIRED to be submitted with your Mail-In Ballot:

A valid Colorado driver's license ;
A valid identification card issued by the Department of Revenue ;
A valid U.S. passport;
A valid employee identification card with a photograph of the eligible elector issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government or of this state, or by any county, municipality, board, authority, or other political subdivision of this state;

What if I make a mistake on my ballot?

If you make a mistake, return your ballot to the Election Judge and you will be issued a new one. If you make a mistake on an Mail-In Ballot, please contact the Election Department at (719) 575-VOTE (8683) for instructions on how to obtain another ballot.
