Highlights from the Inaugural Citizens’ Academy in 2007
Citizens of El Paso County are invited to apply to participate in the second Clerk & Recorder’s Office – Citizens’ Academy beginning June 24, 2008. The nine-week program offers an insider’s view of the four statutory departments that comprise the Clerk & Recorder’s Office and includes a segment, “Live from Centennial Hall,” on Primary Election Night.
Bob Balink, Clerk & Recorder, said, “For several years, as part of our community outreach programs, we have offered in-depth seminars and task forces to share the complexities of conducting elections. Our Citizens’ Academy is designed to provide details of all major areas of our office that affect the citizens of El Paso County including Election, Motor Vehicle, Recording and Clerk to the Board departmental operations. There has been widespread interest in expanding our outreach programs. We feel our office benefits from this dialogue with the citizens we serve. The inaugural Citizens’ Academy in 2007 appealed to a wide variety of community-minded citizens including those considering a career in government service.”
Participants receive a thorough review and analysis of the functions, challenges, statutory requirements and customer service issues of the Election, Recording, Motor Vehicle and Clerk to the Board Departments. Each person who successfully completes the Academy will become an Honorary Deputy Clerk.
The sessions will be held Tuesday evenings, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., June 24 – August 19, 2008. The schedule and application to participate can be accessed by the links shown above. Please note, attendance on Primary Election Night, August 12, is mandatory and to successfully complete the Academy only one absence during the nine-week program may be excused with prior notice.
There is no charge to attend the Academy but space is limited. Participation is open to El Paso County residents. High school seniors and college students are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is June 12, 2008.
